Why Letting Go is the Ultimate Act of Self Care 

Sometimes, our lives can feel like fast forwarded movies with no pause button. One day, you wake up and realize that your carefully curated plans and goals have fallen by the wayside, and you’ve completely lost control over everything.

While this can be terrifying, it can also be completely empowering and a wonderful chance to let go and start fresh. The illusion that we have control over our lives is part of human existence, and we can choose to let it get to us or to surrender into present moment bliss. 

As always, I’m writing this post as a reminder to myself that nothing will ever be perfect. Whether we’re ready for it or not, life happens, and it’s going to keep happening, so we might as well let go and enjoy the journey. 

More often than not, I find myself holding, gripping and grabbing at the things around me, when I could be letting them come to me in perfect divine order. There’s no better gift you can give yourself than the act of letting go and surrendering to the beautiful mess. Not only will you be giving yourself a chance to slow down and enjoy life, but the things you need and desire will come to you so much more easily when you release the tight control you’ve been straining to hold over everything. 

For the most part, we can’t control the things that are happening to us on a moment to moment basis, so instead of getting upset about things, why don’t we embrace it all–the good, the bad and even the “meh” (which can often be even more deadly than the bad). Everything around us is just that: a thing floating around in the universe with no power over us one way or another. Things can only harm us if we give them that power, and letting go ensures that we aren’t bogged down by the events, people or circumstances around us.

I never could have guessed where life would take me five years ago, but I’m so grateful for every experience I’ve been given along the way. Maybe life is unpredictable, but to me, that’s the fun of it all! 

Letting go is all about feeling emotions as they come up and then releasing them to the divine. Instead of reacting in a negative way or allowing the emotion to fester like a wound, we can acknowledge that it’s there and then simply let go, exhaling all the bad and inhaling new, positive energy. 

Keep your heart open always and stay attuned to the subtle thoughts and feelings moving through your body. If you can feel anxiety, doubt or fear creeping up, simply say “thank you” to the emotion before letting go and creating space in your mind for something better. 

One phrase I heard long ago and still keep in the forefront of my mind is “only love is real.” I always find that this helps to ground and centre me in love and light instead of allowing myself to be pulled down by fear. 

If you truly believe that love is the only thing that’s real and everything else is illusion, you will begin to create a beautiful reality for yourself that no negativity can permeate. Negative thoughts and feelings will come and go like waves on the shore, and you will recognize them for what they truly are: creations of the mind.
